Day 22 Reflection 16/11/18 Deirbhile Seville
Professional teaching skills and ability – even better if.
· As I had only one double lesson for the day due to other year groups in exams I was extremely looking forward to my transition year group. I had prepared some interesting visual aids and collected a range of primary sources to motivate the pupils and add some excitement to the class! However when the pupils arrived I discussed the aim of the lesson and they explained that we would only have 20 minutes due to an assembly. As I was never informed of this it meant that what I had planned for our double class could not be possible which was very disheartening. I had to pair the content on the PowerPoint right back to the basics to aid and inform the pupils based on the task we would be conducting. When obstacles like this occur it is quite frustrating as an educator. I had planned the scheme to the upmost with specific time allocated. Now it will have to be pushed back a lesson which means another analysis of the scheme must be done. Although I am greatly as the need to be flexible is a must as an art teacher and this is good experience for myself before entering a position myself.
· What went well: I approached the teacher and queried them on this assemble as I was not informed. They apologised on not informing me. I proposed in future could it be possible for myself to be set up on the email list so I can plan my lessons sufficiently for the pupils. I believe I handled the situation very professionally, I approached the teacher before allowing the pupils to leave the classroom but also posed a solution to stop future confusion.
· Classroom management – What went well and why.
In terms of classroom management I believe I was extremely accurate and professional. Due to the time constraints I had to re-evaluate what aspects of the lesson were vital for the pupils. The AEDP and learning layer were discussed briefly which I think are vital. I then allocated time for demonstrations, distributing primary sources and pupil work. Due to the lesson being very regimented it was surprisingly very successful. The pupils were delighted with the primary sources and focused. I think I was the most successful in how I managed what could have been a stressful situation, to diffuse the problem and have the pupils be extremely productive. In future I will be even more confident dealing with difficulties that arise due to my successful experience today.
· Resources/materials – What went well and why.
· Todays lesson reassured the importance of primary sources. After observing some classes from other teachers were they had not been used I found the pupils to lose interest very quickly and become frustrated as they could not see what they were drawing. I had supplied the pupils with a range of objects based on the theme. The pupils were shocked with the variety of artefacts they could draw. The pupils enthusiasm was spurred by these primary sources, this is why I believe they are vital to a successful lesson.
