Cheeverstown House - Sensory Art Scheme

My teaching placement was located in Cheeverstown House, where I was placed in the primary school section. I  worked with pupils who’s ages ranged from five too eighteen years of age and who were   mostly non-verbal or poor communication abilities that required hand signs Lamh or pictograms to help us understand what was being said.  The (service user’s) students had varying ranges of either physical or intellectual ability or disability depending on which term is most appropriate.

With the group I worked with, the directive within the disability sector is one of empowerment and assisting Service Users to make their own decisions, so therefore the output and quality was very personalised and unique.

All people are different and learn at different stages in accordance to their abilities which was a valuable insight that will assist me in my future teaching experiences.  I will not be presumptuous in the future lessons I may encounter and will always have a diversity to my lesson plans for pupils or service users.
