Day 12 Reflection (Monday) 22/10/18

Professional teaching skills and ability

· PowerPoint presentations and demonstrations were effective for art history.

· Using more practical tasks in Art History seemed to engage the pupils a bit more than they have been. Using Concertina books as a way of practicing illustrations, improving drawing skill and revision of information was successful and a good change in the lesson. Each week I have tried to change the practical task somewhat, however it has been difficult to think of alternatives with the Irish section. In this case I believe it has worked.

· Classroom management

· Pupils were to leave bags at the door and jackets must be off in the art room as it is extremely warm on cold days.

· I had a discussion with my first year group this morning about the rules of the art room and pupils moving around the room without my permission. We had agreed that this is not acceptable and pupils said they would try t avoid this from now on in our lessons. I think having a discussion on the issue rather than myself just speaking demands at the pupils was a much better approach. I guided the conversation in a direction that the pupils and I were both on the same page and came to a collective agreement.

· Presentation of learning content

· PowerPoint presentations were used to start off the lesson, as some of the content had been discussed in the lessons before there was not an over emphasis on the PowerPoint which was a good change for the pupils. A quick revision to remind the pupils of our aim and success criteria was a good motivator, which then gave the practical lesson more time.

· Visual Aids of AEDP and final products were once again effective as a reminder of what the pupils are striving for.

· Effectiveness of planning

Literacy used in word bank sheets, worksheets for Art history on bronze age artefacts and AEDP pattern. Numerously included in sizing up for textile banner, using the rule of thirds and in bronze age content.Pattern, shape, colour, line all evident in lessons.

· The learning layers – cultural context of bronze age people, plastic pollution and colour blindness. Learning layers on plastic pollution and colour blindness had pupils speechless.

Assessment and evaluation of pupils work in class

· Success criteria used in each lesson, on powerpoint for pupils to re-read and pay attention too. Group evaluations and mid lesson evaluations were effective in regards to pupils understanding what they had aimed to achieve and if they did so or not (where they need to improve).
